This month we are updating our CAD Standards and CAD templates as part of our ongoing process of improving the overall quality of our linework offerings. This article will go over some of the changes we will be making in this update, or you can view and download the full layer template at the below link.
We have made numerous changes to our previous templates, with a goal towards increasing the overall consistency and useability of our layer template, while simultaneously conveying more information in a way that is useful to a broader set of overall jobs.
For example, one of the biggest changes that you will see is that our “2D” and “3D” layer delineation has been moved from the end of the layer name to the beginning. This is to allow you to sort by layer names and very easy filter which layers are included in the creation of a surface.
Another easily visible change is that we have added a legend into our template and deliverables. This legend includes all symbols that we use when marking features, and will be included in all linework drawings going forward.
We also added a handful of new layers entirely, which may or may not be obvious depending on the type of projects that you do. For example, we have added in separate layers for bleachers and catwalks which are common on certain jobs, but obviously do not apply to every project.
Hidden under many of the more obvious changes are some changes to our naming and drafting methods and procedures which should help clarify exactly what is drafted. For example, our “X-Crown-3D” layer has been switched to “X-3D-Centerline”, which is drafted along the centerline of the roadway. If the centerline and the crown are different from one another, we will add an additional 3D breakline along the crown to improve the final reconstruction of the TIN surface of the roadway. For all of the details and information on how we draft different features, feel free to check out our resources page on how features are marked.
All of these changes have been made in collaboration with our clients, so thank you to everyone who helped out! And if you think there are more changes that could make your job easier, please let us know. Your feedback helps us constantly improve what we do.
